So This Is February...And What Have You Done?

My title is clearly a play on John Lennon's song HAPPY XMAS. But's only February and I've already experienced so many new things. I set an intention to meet new people, to create and to try new experiences. So...away I went launching into a new year with goals just like the rest of the world.

The first thing I did differently was add pink streaks to my hair for new year's eve. I have only been blonde and I pride myself on having more of a "natural" look. Pink is certainly NOT in that category; but after trying it...I've found I really like it. It was fun and a little edgy for me (the ever blonde, California beach kid). I liked it so much I just put more in.

In January, I attended my first sound bath. For those of you who don't know what a sound bath is, it is a meditative experience where those in attendance are "bathed" in sound waves - usually created by instruments like gongs, singing bowls, drums, chimes, tuning forks, etc. Add all that to floating in a covered salt water pool in the middle of winter in Utah. It was incredible and like nothing I've ever experienced before. While I floated in the water, two musicians with a myriad of drums, chimes, xylophones, gongs and bells played these beautifully peaceful sounds around the pool. It was blissful (other than being slightly cold and trying to keep my mind focused on other parts of the experience). I was so uplifted by that evening. Plus... I checked another new experience off my list. Win/Win!

A week later, a friend of mine who owns Vanilla Foundry offered classes on Vanilla and how she makes incredible vanilla extract. At her home in the small mountain town of Morgan, Utah, we learned about the differences in beans, where to get them and why they're so expensive and how to create our own extracts (and how to make them faster than the usual year-on-a-shelf method). Then we had a tasting. We got to try different varieties of vanilla and guess where they came from. We even got to bring some vanilla home with us.

Another new experience that was a total blast.

A few weeks later, I spent another evening I staying up late painting with friends. I wouldn't consider myself a painter, but its wonderfully therapeutic. I had no idea what to paint but right before I began my painting, a friend had me pull a card that was supposed to be my spirit animal for this year. I was sure I'd pull a hawk or a bison (what I consider my fave bird and animal). Instead, I pulled my card and turned it over to find a squirrel. SERIOUSLY? I was more than a little disappointed. But then I read the description of the "Believe in Yourself" squirrel. The believe in yourself squirrel, in a nutshell (pun totally inteneded) basically says I've socked away enough nuts of wisdom and I only need to believe in myself and execute. My jaw just kept dropping as I continued to read the description. I decided my painting had to be the squirrel.

The entire time I was painting I could not contain my laughter. I kept imagining my youngest son's reaction when he came home and saw my squirrel painting in the house. He would look at me with a straight face and just ask, "Why, Mom?" I couldn't stop giggling. And this is why.

Mine kind of looks like he's playing basketball with his nuts....HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

A few days later, I asked my daughter-in-law if I could go with her to the gym and hang out in the sauna. I haven't been in a sauna for years. Why? Why did I wait so long? It was so invigorating! I felt like a million bucks for the rest of the day. Seriously. I sweat out all the gross-ness my body's been hanging onto. If you have the opportunity...GO! Make the opportunity!

Tonight, for the first time, I tried feng shui. I watched an entire class on it by one of the world's leading experts, Marie Diamond. I was intrigued, and seeing as how this is a new year of possibility, I decided to give it a try. With new ideas and tools I went to work. I tackled 2 small spaces, as I didn't want to get overwhelmed. I shifted, dusted, and got rid of stuff and I'm stunned at how different the spaces not only look, but feel. #mindblown I did my first meditation in my new space and it was the best I've had in weeks.

So, this is February...And what have you done? Get up! Get Inspired! Get moving! Get Planning! Just try something! And be able to laugh at yourself when it doesn't go just right. Just TRY!
